FIREARMS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF SUICIDE & HOMICIDE AMONG BLACK AND BROWN YOUTH IN KING COUNTY.
THE FACTS
It is clear from countywide data that King County has been experiencing a significant increase in youth and community-based gun violence and homicide for the past several years.
As reported in King County census data, the Black community totals 6.56% of the total population but makes up over 50% of the lives lost to gun violence. 85% of all homicides are people of color.
Shooting deaths are up 58% over the three-year average, with 59 firearm homicides reported through the end of September 2020, an increase above the yearly total of 49 in 2019.
